Summary

Several years later, Wanda pilots a boat across what used to be lower Florida. The land has been flooded and turned into a swampy canopy, and the heat during the day is too dangerous for people to survive in. She has been living in her makeshift home for some time, and used to inhabit it with Phyllis before she passed away. Wanda spends the night drying fish and petting a tomcat that comes to visit her. She heads out under the moonless night to find freshwater, eager to avoid the other humans that have managed to linger and survive.

After Kirby’s death, Lucas came back to Rudder and offered to drop out of school to take care of Wanda. Instead, Wanda opted to live with Phyllis while Lucas studied. As Phyllis began training Wanda as a survivalist, Florida began to turn back...
