Summary
When Joe questions Carl about the coded diary entries in Chapter 19, Carl tells him to look at the trial photos if he likes puzzles, suggesting he compare the photos taken before and after the fire department arrived to search for the anomaly that took Carl years to find in prison. Joe asks why Carl did not fight harder to stay out of prison and is told "I thought it would silence the nightmare" (page 119).
