The Mendacity Tree

The Mendacity Tree, also known as the Lie Tree, is a symbol for lies. When a lie is told to the tree, the tree produces a truth. When someone consumes the fruit, they learn the truth. If any light reaches the tree, its leaves begin to wither. If it is placed in full light, it self-destructs. The destruction simulates a lie evaporating when faced with the truth.

Some go to great lengths to possess the tree to learn the truth. For instance, Erasmus lets Hector Winterbourne die to get the tree. Hector's widow, Agatha, kills Erasmus to get it. Though some readers may not realize the significance, mendacity is a word associated with those who lie.
