Summary
Chapter 34 is titled “The Widow.” Agatha's question makes Faith realize that she has overlooked important clues. Agatha says she has a tendency to marry “dabblers,” men who are interested in natural science only as a hobby. Faith also realizes she underestimated Agatha, just as everyone tends to do when women are involved. Faith learns that Crock is loyal to Agatha, who remained in that jungle and saved him even though she could not save her husband. Faith silently admits that her father did steal from Agatha. She says she knows where her father hid a plant and suggests she show them some leaves. She has leaves from the Mendacity Tree she has been carrying around in a tobacco tin, and she throws them on Agatha, knowing they will erupt in flames.
