Summary
Chapter 11 is titled “The Horseshoe.” Howard wakes Faith the next morning from a dream in which she is on trial and refuses to give up her father's identity. Faith finds Miles alone in the drawing room. He says Myrtle is in bed with a headache and Erasmus has not come down. Faith grabs the opportunity, saying she and Erasmus had talked in the study until one o'clock. Faith says she is worried about her confirmation and Miles accepts the story. She struggles with the lie, knowing that God will judge her for lying. Mrs. Vellet announces that Erasmus's coat and hat are gone, meaning he is not at home.
