James and his mother live in San Francisco, one of California’s most populous cities. The specific traits and idiosyncrasies of this setting do not seem to heavily shape the story. However, they do inform some other geographical elements, such as the fact that James is able to take a bus to visit his brother, who lives in Los Angeles, California.
