Summary

In Chapter 18, Chrissie insisted that her aunt go to bed when she began to show signs of having tuberculosis, or consumption, as it was commonly called. A doctor was called who confirmed Chrissie’s diagnosis. Kathleen gave the doctor a roll of money to give to Father Drummond. The next morning, Jackie took food up to Kathleen. When he did not come back down, Chrissie went up to check on him. He was laying next to Kathleen. She was dead.

In Chapter 19, on Christmas Day, Chrissie finally told Jackie she had been sent to live with Kathleen because she was pregnant. He kissed her on the forehead and told her she had a home there as long as she needed it. Kathleen had willed possession of the farm to Jackie. For this reason, Chrissie suggested to him that he begin sleeping inside instead...
