Summary

In Chapter Four, “Honor Thy Liner and Thy Hoops,” Yami gets ready for school the next morning. She takes extra care with her makeup, puts on hoop earrings, and her favorite pair of Jordans. When she arrives, Karen and Jenna hug her and tell her she looks “ghetto” as if it were a compliment. She gets mad at them and sits by herself at lunch. Cesar is busy with his new friends, but he comes up to check on her and offers to fight Karen and Jenna for her. Yami knows he is joking, but she does not want him getting back into any fights. The next day in Language Arts, Mrs. Havens sets up team debates. Yami is forced to argue against gay marriage, and she has a panic attack. Afterwards, she goes to the bathroom to cry.
