Summary
The novel is narrated in first-person present by the protagonist, Yami. In Chapter One, “Thou Shalt Not Trust a Two-Faced Bitch,” Yami is upset because her ex-best friend, Bianca, just came into the coffee shop where Yami was working. Instead of talking to her, Yami quits and goes home, where she punches the mirror in her room. Yami has not spoken to Bianca for a few weeks because Yami told Bianca she was a lesbian at the end of sophomore year and Bianca had outed her. Yami is supposed to be working all summer to help pay for her tuition at Slayton Catholic School, where her and her brother are both transferring for their junior year. While Cesar has a scholarship, Yami does not, so she must find a way to help her mother pay the bills. Her mother does not know that...
