Point of View

The Legend of Auntie Po is written from the main character Mei's first person point of view. Mei's narration appears intermittently throughout the graphic novel in the form of text boxes. These text boxes distinguish the narration from the characters' conversations, which appear in the form of speech bubbles. Mei's narrative voice is simple and easy to understand. For example, Chapter 1 begins with the lines: "This is a story about stories. This is a story about gods and men. The dinner bell is one of my jobs. I have a lot of jobs" (1). Mei's familiar narrative voice appears in text boxes which overlay larger images of her at the logging camp. These images establish the setting for Mei's story, and the places she will be describing throughout the chapters to come.
