Summary
In Chapter 4, Mei tells her friends more stories about Auntie Po.
Auntie Po "could cut down more trees than any other logging crew" (166). At the end of the winter, she and her crew started a log drive. The workers sent the cut logs down the river to the sawmill. The "best and bravest workers" ran the drive (168). These men, "the river pigs," were responsible for making sure the logs did not "pile up, causing a log jam" (169). The men would walk on the wood in the water "to navigate the moving logs" (170). If the logs did get jammed, Auntie Po had to use dynamite. The camp cooks would also "follow the log drive" so the men could have food while they worked (172). Auntie Po always protected her workers.
