Summary

In Chapter 3, Hels tells Hao that the company gave him "direct orders" to fire his Chinese workers (104). The Chinese log workers can stay in camp until the season ends, after which "they'll have to find work at the mines" (104). Hao and Sam must leave camp immediately. Hels has found them housing and work in Chinatown. Hels says Mei can stay at the camp with Bee. Hels is sorry, but is afraid the white men will shut or burn down the logging camp if he does not obey orders. He is worried about his other workers, too. Though he apologies several times, Hao only tells him "Okay, Mister Andersen" (106). Hels promises to "take care of Mei" (107).

Overhearing the conversation, Neils gets worried that he will now have to be head cook. As Sam and Hao leave, Hels tells them everything will "go back to normal...
