Summary
Mayor Kevin Garvey walks toward Mapleton High School and the predetermined assembly spot for the parade marchers. It’s the first annual Departed Heroes’ Day of Remembrance and Reflection. The mood is somber. Grief and bewilderment are in the air. Kevin is pleasantly surprised by the good turnout. Initially, critics were against the parade insisting it was too soon. Over time their objections have faded. Never the less, Kevin realizes that it will be a difficult day. People are carrying signs and photos of loved ones.
Kevin tries to avoid Revered Matt Jamison of the Zion Bible Church but is unable to do so. Matt thrusts a newsletter in Kevin’s face.
