Summary

In Chapter 11, Polly is helping Yong with an acceptance speech he has to give at an awards show. When Deming calls, Polly answers in another room. The next day, Polly is distracted while teaching. At the Fuzhou Business Leaders Forum awards dinner, Yong gives his speech about growing up in “humble beginnings” (227). At a post-dinner drinks session with friends, Polly points out the hypocrisy of discriminating against Sichuanese workers, when you in fact hire them. At home, Yong confronts Polly about Deming, believing him to be a man with whom she is having an affair. Polly breaks down and tells him about her son. Yong holds her closely and comforts Polly.
