Summary
The narrative shifts back in time to Deming’s first meeting with his mother in New York after she had sent him to leave in Minjiang, China, with his grandfather, who he calls Yi Gong. Although he was born in Manhattan Chinatown, the U.S. feels foreign to Deming after five years away. The narrative then moves forward to July, five months after Deming’s mother has left. Deming decides to go to Florida to find his mom, who he thinks ran away with another man. Michael agrees to go to Florida with him, but when they get to the Metro they realize they have no money.
