Journal

Oliver's journal is symbolic of manipulation. Although Oliver says he that he is recording recent events in order to preserve the truth, he is in fact writing his story in order to manipulate the truth. He fears losing control of his narrative, and is thus using the journal to control how others might perceive him.

Adil's Letter

Adil's letter is symbolic of innocence. Adil initially gives the letter to Oliver so he can proofread it before he sends it to Camille. The letter reveals the purity of Adil's heart. Therefore, Oliver keeps it from the police, fearing that it will prove Adil's innocence and in turn his own culpability.
