Summary
Roland, Michael and Davidia head toward the Congo border in the borrowed – now officially stolen – Land Cruiser with a Congolese guide. Michael throws his phone into the White Nile River; he tells everyone to toss their communication devices. Davidia tosses her phone and Roland his phone and lap top. Michael speeds along the rough roads. He drives carelessly, hitting a woman and leaving the scene. Davidia is sobbing and begging Michael to return to the woman but he refuses – she wasn’t watching, he says. They sleep in the car that night.
Near sunrise, Michael starts talking like a madman. Davidia is sure he is going insane. Michael is taking Lariam because he had malaria once. It can cause nightmares and bizarre behavior. They are back on the road by 9 am and see very few motorized vehicles. Many pedestrians stroll on the roadway...
