Summary

Harrison joins the swim team to avoid talking to people in Chapter 8. He is in grade nine. Johanna is depressed that she failed to make a tight-knit family.

When the kids are in grade eleven, Johanna attends a parents’ meeting at their high school, Walden, about college applications. She feels overwhelmed when another mom asks her what colleges the triplets want to go to.

Johanna heads to a bookstore. She chats with a Walden dad there while they browse books about colleges. He leaves. Johanna spots a child who resembles a young Lewyn reading on the floor. He is clearly of mixed race. When a woman scoops the child up and leaves the store, Johanna is sure that the woman is Stella Western and that the child’s father is Salo.

Johanna met Stella at a dinner once, then never thought of her...
