Part Two: Chapter 26: Crazy Jane and Chapter 27: Cans Summary
Charlie picks up the knife and hurls it into the night. Just as he starts walking again, an arm comes out of the dark and grabs him. The woman, who had been hiding in a doorway, steps out. She is small and dirty, and tells him she knows him. She talks about mind control, impulses, and her ability to hide from them. She says she knows they are coming, repeating it again and again. She leads him to her hideaway, telling him they don't know where it is yet, and promising to protect him. Her hideaway is on the fifth floor of a brick building where she assures him they are safe. Three cats greet them and she feeds them while Charlie looks around at the piles of papers...
