Summary

Chapter 6 begins on the day of Joe and Sandrine’s engagement party in 2004. Renee is working a shift in the Emergency Room. Upon hearing a husband call out a message of support to his wife, who has rushed in in labor, Renee suddenly flashes back to the moment when she had been pursued by the man after school. Instead of successfully hiding from the man, as she had told Caroline and Fiona, Renee had in fact been assaulted by the man, and was saved by the arrival of Joe, who beat up the adult despite then being 10 years old. The experience had dissuaded Renee from ever wanting to pursue romance, even though she was once invited to her high school prom by a very attractive boy, who she turned down. In the present moment, Renee takes in a patient who is bleeding profusely...
