Pianos

Agnes's pianos are symbolic of expression. Whenever Agnes is playing the piano, she feels grounded in her truest and most pure version of self. This version of self is more amorphous than any of her other identities. The pianos are thus a gateway to a divine version of self-discovery and self-expression.

Music

For Agnes, music is symbolic of time itself. Whenever she is playing the piano, and particularly the music of Chopin, Agnes's memories awaken. She can remember facets of her past that otherwise lie dormant inside of her. Music therefore connects her to various eras in time, granting her clarity for her present life.

Flood

The flood that takes Agnes away from her life at the farm is symbolic of new life. The flood ultimately ushers Agnes out of life as Agnes and into her life as Father Damien. The water imagery inherent to the...
