Little No Horse
Little No Horse is the primary setting of the novel. Little No Horse is a Native reservation located in the Dakotas region. This is the reservation to which the real Father Damien Modeste is heading at the start of the novel. When Agnes discovers Father Damien's body in her travels following the flood, she decides to don his robes and identity and travel to the reservation as the priest.
Over the course of Father Damien's life at Little No Horse, he becomes an active and integral member of the community. Instead of enforcing the rigid doctrines of the Catholic church on the Little No Horse residents, Father Damien adopts a more amorphous mode of ministering to the community.
