Agnes DeWitt
Agnes DeWitt is the main character of the novel. When Agnes is a young woman, she flees her home and family and joins the convent. Six months after her arrival, she becomes Sister Cecilia. However, Sister Cecilia’s time at the convent is complicated by her love of music. She becomes particularly passionate about playing the piano. Each time she plays, she undresses. She soon starts to orgasm while performing Chopin pieces. When the Mother Superior discovers her, she revokes her piano playing privileges and locks away her music. Unable to live without the piano, Sister Cecilia flees the convent and shows up at Berndt Vogel’s nearby farm. She has once again become Agnes DeWitt.
