Summary
In Chapter 13, “The Recognition, 1923,” Agnes wondered if the dog was the devil. She talked to Nanapush about it while playing chess. In the middle of their game, Nanapush asked Damien if he was “A man priest or a woman priest” (230). Agnes was shocked. She tried to answer cleverly. When Nanpush won, she realized he did not care about the truth. He had used the topic to distract and beat her.
In Chapter 14, “Lulu, 1996,” roughly a week after Jude met Lulu, he realized he had “fallen in love” (235). During a conversation with Damien about Napoleon’s murder and Leopolda, Jude could not help applying Damien’s words to his heartsicknesses. Jude was then shocked when Damien announced that the church had been wrong to believe “conversion would bring about redemption” (239). Jude left Damien to find Lulu.
