Summary

Chapter 28 is titled “The Edge of the World.” Rian summons everyone to the deck. The lieutenant is angry that Rian has become so authoritative. He reads the letters that Rian says is from Sangra, though Sai actually forged it. The lieutenant questions the orders, but stops short of actually entering Sangra's room. Another sailor reads the letters aloud. One indicates they are setting out for the Sunderlands, and warns of the dangers they might encounter. The letter ends by saying Rian will be in charge until Sangra recovers. The second letter says Paiyoon is released from his duty because of the dangerous voyage ahead. When Lark objects, Rian says Sai will take over as mapmaker. Paiyoon quietly asks Sai if she is certain about this. When she nods, he tells Rian that Sai is perfectly capable of taking on this task.
