Part One: Headwaters Summary and Analysis
Since Winston's birth is not expected, no arrangements have been made. There are no diapers, cradles or other baby supplies. Randolph's mother, Frances, Duchess of Marlborough, has to borrow supplies from the town's solicitor whose baby is not due for several months. The baby is baptized Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill on December 27. Soon after, Randolph and Jennie are back at their Mayfair home and hire Elizabeth Anne Everest to be Winston's nanny. Like most upper class parents, they have very little to do with their son. They do not even have the usual token meetings with the child. They are too busy with parties and other social activities, living beyond their means. Randolph's family is good friends with His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales.
