Summary
Part 3 opens with Chapter 16, dated September 2003, 39 years after Jennifer left the message for Anthony at his newspaper office. Ellie Haworth is a features reporter for The Nation (the same newspaper that employed Anthony). She is stressing over the meaning of a text message from her boyfriend, John. She often talks to her best friends about this relationship but does not reveal everything, such as the fact that John's message was an apology that he could not see her the previous evening because the situation was “tricky at home” (232). The Nation is moving to a new office after a century in this building. The features department head, Melissa, is talking about some old information found as the library prepares for the move.
