Summary

Part 2 opens with Chapter 12, which takes place in the Summer of 1964. This is four years after Jennifer met Anthony. Jennifer is at the hospital, this time visiting Yvonne who is on bed rest during her second pregnancy. They talk about a couple they know who are getting a divorce and a party Jennifer is attending. Jennifer takes a couple of Valium, considers taking pentobarbital as well, and gets ready for a party. Laurence disapproves of her dress, saying it makes her look “bony.” She tries not to let the constant barbs hurt. He suggests she put more thought into her appearance as he lights a cigar. Their friends and Laurence's business associates consider her “always perfectly put together” and calm in any situation. Laurence berates her, even in front of others.
