Summary
Chapter 6 opens in December 1960, some two months after the accident. Chapter 6 picks up shortly after the events in Chapter 4 where Jennifer finds the letter. Jennifer makes breakfast for Laurence each morning then sees him off to work, mostly in silence. Mrs. Cordoza arrives and Jennifer plans what will get done that day. At some point in the afternoon, Jennifer sends Mrs. Cordoza on an errand so she can continue to search for letters. She has found two more, and the words are “imprinted on her soul” (78). He pledges to be a better man, recognizing the cliché, because he wants Jennifer to be proud of him. He begs her not to love Laurence.
