Point of View
The narrative in The Last House Guest is told through the first-person perspective of Avery Greer. She tells the story both from the summer of 2018 and through her reflections on the summer of 2017, which are broken up throughout the novel. The book ends in the summer of 2019, with Avery telling the reader how she has fared since the summer of 2018 plot-line ended. Throughout the novel, Avery gives the reader glimpses back to what her life was like before the summer of 2017. This shows the reader that Avery is sifting back through her memories, trying to piece together the puzzle of how and why Sadie died.
