Avery Greer

Avery Greer is the main protagonist in the novel, and she tells the tale in first-person. Avery is a lifelong resident of Littleport and is currently coping with the apparent suicide of her best friend, Sadie Loman. Avery has already lost a lot of important people in her life. Her parents died in a horrific car accident when she was a child. Her grandmother survived the crash but later passed away, leaving what little she had to Avery.

Avery's losses also extend to people who are still alive. Since meeting the Lomans a decade ago, Sadie has slipped further away from her two childhood friends, Connor and Faith. Although she still sees them around town, she does not really speak with them.
