Summary
Chapter 3 is titled “Battle and Siege” and opens the following spring. Jean joined a military expedition consisting of French knights and fighters who would join the Scots then travel to England and “burn their way through English lands, plundering towns and castles and destroying farms and villages just as crops were ripening for harvest” (39). Sir Jean de Vienne (referred to in this guide as Vienne) led about 3,000 men. Jean was probably hoping to get away from “recent embarrassments” at home and to return with wealth stolen from the English. Marguerite returned to her father's home, Fontaine-le-Sorel. Marguerite's cousin, Robert de Thibouville, accompanied Jean on the campaign. Though Jean and Marguerite had been married five years, she had not had a child.
