Summary
Ptolemy and Robyn scheduled an appointment with Church’s referral, Dr. Ruben. Then Ptolemy invited Robyn to live with him, promising to buy her a bed and dresser. When she argued that he could not afford it, Ptolemy took out a key, and unlocked a case containing “almost ninety-four thousand dollars” (110). He said he had kept the money hidden from everyone including Reggie. When Robyn asked if it was the treasure Ptolemy had mentioned, he explained it was Social Security and retirement money. The treasure was stolen and “cursed with blood” (111). When Ptolemy offered the money to Robyn, she refused and fled.
Ptolemy “felt pain in his joints,” terrified Robyn would never return (112). When she finally did return, Ptolemy told her about Maude Petit and the fire. Though Robyn did not “understand exactly,” she “didn’t question” him (115).
