Summary
Chapter 19 provides readers with a close look into how Lily is feeling. She has been in Iran for two months now and questions her mother's motives in bringing her to Tehran. She is miserable and lonely and yet feels relieved not to be near her friends, who she feels she has to impress all the time. Lily enjoys the feeling of freedom while also mourning the loss of her life that she was yanked out of. Lily befriends Karim when he brings her a kitten one day. Noor asks Karim to be Lily's friend, and the two young people grow to love spending time with one another. Karim teaches Lily some Farsi while Lily teaches Karim some English. Noor does not want to leave Cafe Leila because she does not want to leave her father. Zod demands that she leave and take Lily...
