Summary
In Chapter 14, on an afternoon when there were no air raid warnings, a burly man named Jack visited the shop and thanked Grace for saving his life. He explained he had been going to the Farringdon Station shelter to hear her read instead of going to a shelter closer to his work. Two days before, a bomb had come through the roof of the shelter where Jack would have been if not for Grace’s readings. Jack motioned to a group of people standing outside the shop who had gathered at Farringdon Station to hear more of the book. After that, Grace read every day either in the shop or in the shelter.
One night while Grace and Stokes were on patrol, Nazi planes dropped bombs on their sector. The sandbags behind where they took shelter were shredded, but neither Grace nor Stokes...
