Summary
In Chapter 10, because Grace wanted to do her part in the war effort, she attended several VWS meetings with Weatherford, but felt out of place with the married women. When Mr. Stokes, the air raid warden, visited the store in search of a new book, he asked if Evans or Grace knew of anyone who might be willing to volunteer as a warden. Evans mentioned Grace had been considering the position. Stokes implied Grace could not handle the job because she was a woman. Perhaps, because of the insinuation, Grace told Stokes she intended to volunteer.
During her first evening shift, Stokes criticized Grace because she had trouble seeing in the blackout conditions. As her eyes began to adjust. Stokes pointed out the locations of bomb shelters and told her the names of who lived in each house. He also described the effects...
