Summary

As a child, Haddish was raised by her mother and step-father, whom she refers to only as "Step-Father," never by a real name (38). Her mother and Step-Father had three children together, all younger than Haddish. She felt as though her mother loved those children more, simply because "she loved their dad... [and] she didn't love [Haddish's] dad" (38). Her mother worked a lot, including some graveyard shifts. When Haddish was eight years old, she convinced her mother to let her babysit her three younger siblings; her mother, already running late for work, accepted Haddish's offer. The next morning, her mother never returned. Three days passed before Haddish discovered that her mother had been in a car accident, an accident that left her bruised, swollen, and with a traumatic brain injury. She had to re-learn how to walk, talk, and complete simple tasks...
