Chapter One Summary
Chapter One begins with the introduction of the story of an ape named Shift who was clever, ugly, and wrinkled. The Ape had a small house that was built in the fork of the tree. There were not that many talking beasts, men or dwarfs in the part of the woods where Shift lives. Shift has a donkey for a friend and his name is Puzzle, but he is actually more like a servant because he does all of the work. Puzzle didn't complain and just agreed that he was not clever.
Shift walked by the shore of the caldron pool under the cliffs near the western part of Narnia where there is a waterfall that empties into the River of Narnia. Shift encouraged him to jump in to go after something floating in the water. Shift ends up going in...
