Summary

Chapter 10 is titled “Hampton Haywood” and is dated Monday, June 3, 1929. Hampton had been six years old in 1910 when his father had an argument with the landowner. Hampton's dad, a sharecropper, had been cheated out of what he earned for several years, but he stood up for himself that year. The landowner's son had come to the door with a pistol in his hand, and Hampton's father shot and killed the man. They gathered their meager possessions, then Hampton's parents ran with Hampton and his younger sister, Summer. They spent a night hiding under a house, then caught a train at Vicksburg. While the train was stopped at Yazoo City, police arrested Hampton's father. He, his mother, and his sister remained on the train and never saw his father again.
