Summary
Chapter Three
Tom and the Spook arrive in the mining town of Horshaw. The Spook takes Tom down an abandoned street, to the 13th house. Tom laments that this is supposed to be an unlucky number. The Spook gives him strict instructions to stay in the supposedly haunted house until midnight. He’s not to let the candle go out, or open the door for anyone that knocks. Something comes up from the cellar, but it doesn’t answer Tom. While he’s scared at first, he gradually grows more comfortable. He hears someone claiming to be his mother trying to get in, but he knows that it isn’t her and ignores the pleas.
