Summary
In Chapter 51, Rose tells Sophie the secret of the Munro Baby Mystery. In 1932 there were only two houses on Scribbly Gum Island, the house where Rose and Connie lived with their parents and their grandparents' home. Their grandmother was dead and their grandfather lived there alone. Their grandfather had won the island in a bet. Rose and Connie's father, Mr. Doughty, was never quite right in the head since he had fought in World War I so he wasn't able to work. Their mother supported the family by working in a clothing factory. One day she left her winter coat on the train and caught pneumonia by walking home in the winter. She died of pneumonia a few days later at the age of 37. Their grandfather died a month later.
