Part One: III, What the Hand Found and IV, The Reckoning Summary
In What the Hand Found, Macandal is given the job of taking the cattle out to pasture. While he is out in the foothills during the day, he discovers various plants growing wild. He begins to collect the herbs, leaves, seeds, and mushrooms that he finds. He's especially interested in the seemingly poisonous mushrooms. Ti Noël makes excuses to go out and spend time with Macandal. They visit an old woman, a voodoo practitioner, who talks with Macandal about voodoo and assesses the plants he's found. Macandal and Ti Noël test some of the poison by poisoning a dog. Then, Macandal says it's time, and he disappears from the plantation.
