Salzburg, Austria

The novel opens in Salzburg, Austria, and several of the important scenes take place here. This is the city the Mozart family calls home. They live in a rented apartment that looks down over the Getreidegasse neighborhood. In modern times, the neighborhood is identified as an older part of town. The apartment is relatively modest because the family did not have a lot of money. Nannerl and Woferl share a bedroom for years, until their parents decide it is no longer proper. At that point, their only servant takes a room in a nearby building so that the children can each have a room. The city morphs into the Kingdom of Back often, and Nannerl and Woferl sometimes move directly from a specific place in Salzburg into the Kingdom of Back.
