Summary
In Chapter 12, Thatcher/Ezzedine was summoned to meet the king. The king's monkey, given as a gift by the Spanish ambassador, was also present, as was Dr. Craig. James and Thatcher discussed the illness scrofula and the belief that English monarchs can cure it by laying hands on a subject. James asked Thatcher if he thought the belief “too Catholic” (210). They further discussed Thatcher's former belief in Islam. In Chapter 13, the king's monkey died and Thatcher was asked to examine the body and determine the cause of death. He assured those present that the monkey had kidney disease. In Chapter 14, Thatcher wiped down the chess pieces the king had “indirectly licked” (217) many times and put them away.
