In Chapter 1, Thatcher/Ezzedine arrived in James's castle where he met the king's other physician, Dr. Craig, who greeted him coldly. He was unsettled by Leveret/Belloc's warning that he would be observed and listened to at all times in the castle, and dreamed of discovering all the ways he was being spied upon. In Chapter 2, a couple of weeks later, Ezzedine saw Belloc and told him he had yet to even see King James. However, a short time later, he discovered this was not true.
