In Chapter 1, Ezzedine now went by Matthew Thatcher, as he was baptized Christian and changed his name before coming to Baron Moresby's home in Cumberland 10 years earlier. He was in a park investigating herbs and watching some rabbits do the same. He wondered how the animals knew which plants were poisonous and if God would forgive him if he set aside his own knowledge and poisoned himself intentionally. He thought of Constantinople, which he had been trying to avoid for years. Chapter 2 flashes back to when Moresby awoke in the palace after his seizure, surprised to discover Ezzedine attending to him. He was also surprised that Ezzedine knew all about seizures. Shortly thereafter, Moresby and Ezzedine set off...
