New York City

New York City is the hometown of Mark, Trina, Toad, Misty, and Darnell. It is where they live and work. New York City is also the site of a conference for the defense industry, which brings Alec and Lana to the area. Following the sun flares, it is where they hole up in the Lincoln Building, and then later flee for New Jersey.

North Carolina

Western North Carolina, in the eastern United States, is where the Appalachian Mountains and the village in which Mark and the others live are located. It is where Asheville is located, and serves therein as the main setting of the novel.
