Also known as May, Maysie is the 16-year-old middle child of the Gold family. She is not athletic, like her sisters. May is a smart girl who attends private school and hopes to receive an academic scholarship to college. May feels that her mother and father favor her sisters because they are beautiful and athletic. May is in love with Pete, a family friend who teaches her to drive. Throughout the book May is working on passing her driver's exam. May doesn't see her driver's license as freedom, she sees it as a burden. May is the caretaker of her family and her mother's helper. When May receives her license she is expected to run errands and drive her younger sister around. May resents her older sister and feels that her younger sister isn't mature.
