In Chapter 1, May reveals that her real name is Mayzie and that she and her sisters are all named after her father's favorite baseball players. May is the only sister who doesn't play softball. It has been almost a year since her father's death and May is taking her driver's test. She is slow behind the wheel and the test proctor is becoming increasingly irritated. May fails her driver's test and her mother takes her home. May's mother is a former punk rock girl turned soccer mom. She is Dutch and is a nurse. She apologizes to May for not having more time to teach her to drive; May tells her is couldn't be helped because their schedules were at odds lately.
