Summary
“A Daughter’s Honour” - Narration sets the time of this chapter as the mid-1950’s. Nnaife begins to make plans to return home to Ibuza for his death and burial, planning to do so as soon after he retires as he can. Meanwhile, Oshia graduates from college but, instead of helping his family, he plans to continue his studies in the United States, at a school where he has received a scholarship. Nnaife erupts in anger, complaining that his son is both ungrateful and not living up to his responsibilities as a man and as a member of the family. “If there was any gain to come from [Nnaife’s] sacrifices, he wanted it now, and preferably in cash” (202). Harsh words are said on both sides, despite the efforts of the rest of the family to calm both men down. Oshia leaves...
